The people of Germany and Austria are known for being 'gemütlich,’ which means “pleasant or friendly” in German. Meet them when you visit the countries of Mozart and Goethe, the Black forest and the Wiener Wald, and discover some of the most delicious cuisine, fascinating traditions, and beautiful sights in Europe.
When considering the 3 days in 15 Austrian Flexipass, remember there is a European East Pass which gives you any 5 days in a month ($244 first class, $172 second class) and covers Austria with the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland to boot. If you’re going to Prague or Budapest, this may actually beat the Austrian pass. Find the European East Pass and other Austria combos on our Eastern Europe page.
Rail service in Germany is comprehensive, fast, frequent, and expensive. The German Flexipass is a good value, often saving money while allowing you to hop trains at your convenience. Most routes, including InterCityExpress trains, do not need reservations (but night trains and the rare Berlin-Frankfurt ICE Sprinter do require reservations). Two people traveling together each save 25% with a Twinpass. All passes for Germany also cover border towns such as Salzburg, Austria, and Basel, Switzerland on trips to or from Germany. Passes are not valid on CityNightLine trains or Germany-Italy night trains unless they cover your whole route, nor on the few Hamburg-Cologne departures called "Metropolitan." Second class is comfortable and preferred by most leisure travelers.
